Massage and Sports

If  your trying to improve your performance on the field, regardless of your sport,  there are some things you should know.  All sports require strength, balance,  flexibility, and mental acuity to  get the kind of results your looking for , so here are a few things that will help you along the way.. in your quest for better performance and lesser injuries. Later I will go into detail.

  • Good Nutrition- A diet that contains” high quality” Proteins, Fats, and Carbohydrates.  By Quality I mean Organic. Also,  your nutrition ought come from plant sources  mostly. Meats and dairy contain higher concentrations of pesticides, herbicides, etc., that damage the organs, and get stored in body tissues. Most athletes have higher protein needs,  there are a variety of plant based proteins available.  Incidentally, eating from a variety of foods is a good idea, this helps make sure your getting most of what you need, also, changing foods helps reduce food allergies.
  • Sleep- The body just does not do well without it. Get your 6-8 hours. If you wake up feeling tired, your probably not getting enough sleep. The body regenerates itself while you rest, that helps you to recover faster.
  • Strength, Balance, and  flexibility are all related. Your balance will be effected directly by the strength of your muscles. Your muscles work in pairs. For example, your bicep and triceps,  for one muscle in the group  to “work” (contract) the other muscle must relax or stretch, this allows for free and graceful movements to occur. When this mechanism  is not working right you may experience a muscle cramp or spasm, or perhaps a loss or Range of motion (the amount of movement in a joint).  Say your playing football, wide receiver running a pattern,  your triceps muscle are too tight in relation to your bicep, so you may not be able to straighten your arm fully and you drop the intended pass as it airs out just beyond your reach. Perhaps you have full range of motion but because the muscles are unbalanced your movement is slower, less graceful, you drop the ball. The answer…..balance all muscle groups of the body. See muscle balancing Post (coming soon)

Rubbed the wrong way!

Even legitimate Massage Therapists can be rubbed the wrong way. Understand, I have been a Massage Therapist for over 17 years. It still hurts to hear the one liners from people who ought to know better, or maybe not.  I look at Massage ads in the paper, or in a phone book, or under the category “Therapeutic Massage” on craigslist, and I feel sick. Of course, many of these “people” are not Massage Therapists but they fly in under that banner, and because of it, potential clients become leery about Massage. I understand, and believe you me, it gets under my skin. Sometimes I just want to give it up.  But no, perhaps these Massage impostors are going to end up ruining it for all the really good hard working Therapists that have done so much good for our communities. I don’t know, but I don’t want the art of Massage lost to the public, it is much to needed, to be squandered away.

On the other end of the spectrum are establishments like Massage Envy, who I believe under-compensate, their mostly new graduate fledgling Therapists, and hard sell the customers into Massage “packages”. These  overworked therapists break down fast, and the turnover is high. Customers are also pressured into tipping. I’m sure there not all like that, however I hear it quite a bit, and more.

This is the dark side of the Massage business

Can’t I just learn Massage from a book or video?

What’s wrong with learning Massage from a book or video?  Not a thing, yet  there are advantages to getting home mentoring in the art of Massage. After all, Massage is a “hands on ” profession. You will learn faster and get better results. Why? Feedback!  A teacher can immediately identify a technique executed correctly right from the start. This is important because you develop  good massage work habits, bad habits are hard to correct, don’t get the job done, and you may end up physically  hurting  yourself, or your loved one. How good then is your Massage really? The techniques you learn from the “book” may not be appropriate  for the person receiving the Massage or the person giving. For example,  your  wanting to use  a technique involving direct finger tip pressure to your partners back.  Perhaps you are a smaller petite woman with small hands  and not a lot of hand strength. Your partner, on the other hand weighs in at 250 with muscles tight as a drum. Try as you may, pressing as hard as you can, he can barely feel you, and your wrist and fingers are beginning to throb. You barely have enough strength to throw that massage book away. Being out the $20 and whatever you spent on that wonderful table pales to the feeling of not being able to share this wonderful experience that Massage can add to your relationship.

With Massage, it is about the quality of the interaction. While all touch is good and nurturing, focused, educated touch yields even better experiences.

Massage and Chiropractic

Massage is a good stand alone to be sure. But it is also useful as an adjunct to other therapies, and  activities. Things do go better with Massage….plus It’s alot healthier than a Coke.

Take Chiropractic,  the benefits of which by now are well known. The body’s vertebra are adjusted to put the body posture back into” alignment“. But for that to work the soft tissues, muscles and tendons, must cooperate.  The bones provide a structure or framework, but it is the muscles of the body that give the body it’s support through a balanced network of levers that make it possible to hold everything together, to make it possible to stand upright, to move. Otherwise, without the help of the muscular system we would simply be a pile of bones. So when you receive your Chiropractic adjustment, that is to realign your bones back to their correct position, there is no guarantee that the bones will stay where they are put, that is in part why repeat visits are required. Essentially, the imbalanced muscles which surround the bones will simply pull the bone back out of position. So a Massage , by a skilled professional, will relax and re-balance those same muscles helping you to keep your adjustment.  You could be out of pain, and healed sooner rather than later. Sometimes the muscles are so tight that they make the adjustment more difficult or impossible, as a result the Doctor may use more force to make it happen. More force means more trauma, inflammation,  pain, and a slower recovery. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a great advocate for Chiropractic, and have worked in their offices for 17 years, it is a wonderful therapy. So If I made you nervous about getting  Chiropractic treatment, don’t worry, just get a Massage before, and you will likely require much less force to “put you back together”, and make the whole experience  more productive and enjoyable.

Man’s best friend……..

In the 21st century man’s best friend may no longer be the dog,  it may turn out being the Tennis ball. While the dog may still provide love and affection, the Tennis ball may provide for needed  muscular relief.  In the absence of, or as a supplement to getting a Massage,  the ball used correctly, can reach out of the way muscles with ease.  Proper use of this round little helper makes this fuzzy friend most efficient.  When I say “proper” I mean that you let gravity do the work. Essentially, in one form or another,  sit on it! Let your body weight provide the needed pressure.

I would suggest we start by putting three tennis balls in an old sock, tie the end of the sock so that the meany greenies are tightly compacted. From time to time you may have to tighten the sock up again, and or replace balls that have gone flat from use.

You can start with your feet.  Let me walk you through it…..
